This website offers a 6.5 minute educational video, targeted at middle school and high school students, illustrating the critical role transportation plays in our modern economy. "The Transportation Economy: Just in Time" provides students with a glimpse of how transportation has become an integral part of the modern economy. The website includes both streaming and downloadable formats, along with a full transcript of the production and a downloadable PowerPoint® presentation. These materials can supplement middle school and high school economics and civics classes.

Overview of UTCM Project #11-10-75: Intercity Passenger Rail: Implications for Urban, Regional, and National Mobility

Recent policy and regulatory events have raised interest in intercity passenger rail as a personal mobility solution among transportation planners, policymakers, and the general public. As the nation moves forward with significant development of its intercity passenger rail infrastructure, understanding who is using existing services, how the services are being used to enhance mobility, and implications for regional travel patterns if investments in passenger rail are not made are critical to support planning and decisionmaking. Due to a general lack of investment in passenger rail in the U.S. over the last several decades, however, there are very few corridors in the country where intercity passenger rail could truly be considered well-integrated into the multimodal transportation system. One such intercity corridor is between Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Chicago, Illinois. Operating between the two cities (approximately 90 miles) is an Amtrak intercity passenger rail route known as the Hiawatha Service.

"Best Practices and Outreach for Active Traffic Management"

Continued growth in travel in congested freeway corridors and limited public funding for expansion and improvement projects are limiting agencies' abilities to provide sufficient roadway capacity in major metropolitan areas. Focusing on trip reliability, active traffic management (ATM)—widely deployed for decades in Europe but in its early stages in the United States—maximizes the effectiveness and efficiency of the facility, and increases throughput and safety through integrated systems with new technology, including the automation of dynamic deployment to optimize performance quickly. This congestion management approach consists of a combination of strategies that, when implemented in concert, fully optimize the existing infrastructure and provide measurable benefits to the transportation network and the motoring public. These strategies include speed harmonization, temporary shoulder use, junction control, and dynamic signing and re-routing. By providing transportation agencies across the United States with crucial information on best practices for deployment and operation of ATM strategies, this project can have a positive impact on transportation networks were ATM is deployed. This document provides an overview of practices to date in ATM deployment as well as general guidelines that can help facilitate ATM implementation.
